    Cat’s Mfg m4a1 vintage

Posted by Ben Seeley on 24th Feb 2026

I feel like I can now give an up to date review, as I have everything built out, and finished basically. My example is really really nice. The overall color is a nice grey ish, with deeper slightly straw colors/almost purple ish/plum hues, seen on real faded and antique aluminum anodizing. Not quite the more prominent “plum” change you might see on an old Leupold scope for example, but as said, subtle tones in that direction of the straw and plum with the overall dominate color a nice muted grey. The edges and high spots are worn to a slightly lighter grey, and there are tastefully applied small dings, and spots where the bright silver aluminum shows through, on the hard edges. I actually took mine further and wore through the anodizing to the bare aluminum on some of the high spots and edges, giving it more of the “salty”, heavily used and carried look. Overall very impressed! Markings are awesome, and the SBR engraving service is a great value. Upper and lower fit well and finish even between the two parts.

Great looking receivers. Built out with vintage parts and they look wonderful. Hope you make a matched vintage A1 set with same finish!
